The discovery of Mixter and Barr in 1934 that sciatica could be caused by a disc protrusion started a movement which led to a great clarification of thought on peripheral pain in general.
Since that time, they said, the most common cause of low back pain, with or without sciatica, is a. protruded or herniated lumbar disc.
It is the purpose of this communication to analyse and evaluate the clinical signs, symptoms, and the end result of the 121 consecutive series of herniated lumbar intervertebral discs which were treated conservatively from Jan. 1960 to 1968 in severance Hospital.
The clinical status of 121 patients on discharge were as follows; 39(32.2%) were in Excellent, 58. (47.9%) in Good, 11(9.2%) in Fair, and 13(10.7%) in Poor. Clinically satisfactory results could be obin 97(80.1%)cases of them.
The follow up end results of conservative lumbar intervertebral discs were as follows;
Of the 121 cases, followed only 39 cases(32.2%). Average follow up period was 39 months, and 11 cases(30. 1%) were found to have made a complete recovery(Excellent), 13 cases(37. 1%) were in Good, 8 cases(22. 8%) in Fair, and finally 3 cases(10.0%) showed recurrent pain in the back and leg.
Therefore satisfactory results could be obtained in 24 cases(67.2%) of them.
